LEMOSHO ROUTE
The Beautiful Long Approach
7–8 Days | Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
A quieter, more immersive approach to the Roof of Africa.
The Lemosho Route is one of the most scenic ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Approaching the mountain from the west, the route begins in remote rainforest before crossing the beautiful Shira Plateau and joining the southern circuit toward Barranco, Karanga, Barafu and Uhuru Peak.
With more time for acclimatization, varied scenery and a quieter beginning, Lemosho is particularly well suited to travellers looking for a premium private Kilimanjaro experience.
Best for:
-
More acclimatization
-
Scenic trekking
-
Private climbs
Difficulty: Moderate–Challenging
Recommended: 8 Days

WHY CHOOSE THE LEMOSHO ROUTE?
The Scenic Western Approach
Lemosho offers a more gradual introduction to Mount Kilimanjaro than many of the shorter routes.
The trail begins on the western side of the mountain, moving through montane rainforest, heath and moorland, the Shira Plateau and alpine desert before joining the southern circuit.
The quieter western approach, combined with additional time on the mountain, makes Lemosho an excellent choice for travellers who want to slow down and enjoy the journey rather than rush toward the summit.
Along the way, you'll experience:
-
Remote rainforest
-
Shira Plateau
-
Dramatic volcanic landscapes
-
Lava Tower
-
Barranco Wall
-
Karanga Valley
-
Barafu Camp
-
Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m

8-DAY LEMOSHO ROUTE
Our Recommended Itinerary
For travellers who have the time, the 8-day Lemosho Route is our preferred option.
The longer itinerary allows you to experience the western approach at a comfortable pace while providing additional time for acclimatization before the summit.
DAY 1 — LEMOSHO GATE → FOREST CAMP
Rainforest | 4–5 hours
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a transfer to Lemosho Gate.
After registration, you enter the beautiful montane rainforest and begin a gradual ascent through one of Kilimanjaro's most atmospheric environments.
The forest is rich with vegetation and birdlife, creating a peaceful introduction to the mountain.
Overnight: Forest Camp
DAY 4 — MOIR CAMP → LAVA TOWER → BARRANCO CAMP
Alpine Desert | 6–8 hours
A key acclimatization day.
You climb toward Lava Tower, reaching approximately 4,600 metres, before descending toward Barranco Camp.
This “climb high, sleep low” profile provides valuable exposure to higher altitude while allowing you to sleep at a lower elevation.
As you descend into Barranco Valley, the dramatic Barranco Wall comes into view.
Overnight: Barranco Camp
DAY 7 — BARAFU → UHURU PEAK → MWEKA CAMP
SUMMIT DAY
Uhuru Peak – 5,895 m
Your summit attempt begins during the night.
Slowly ascend toward Stella Point as the first light appears over the African horizon.
From the crater rim, continue toward Uhuru Peak — the highest point in Africa.
After celebrating your achievement, begin the descent toward Barafu before continuing to Mweka Camp.
Overnight: Mweka Camp
DAY 2 — FOREST CAMP → SHIRA CAMP
Heath & Moorland | 5–7 hours
The forest gradually gives way to open heath and moorland as you continue higher.
The landscape becomes wider and more dramatic as you approach the Shira Plateau, with views toward Kibo and the surrounding mountain landscape.
Overnight: Shira Camp
DAY 5 — BARRANCO → KARANGA CAMP
Barranco Wall | 4–5 hours
After breakfast, begin the ascent of the famous Barranco Wall.
The trail then continues through the alpine desert toward Karanga Valley.
The relatively short trekking day gives you time to rest, hydrate and continue preparing for the summit stages.
Overnight: Karanga Camp
DAY 8 — MWEKA CAMP → MWEKA GATE
Rainforest | 3–4 hours
Your final morning takes you back through the rainforest toward Mweka Gate.
After completing the park formalities and receiving your summit certificate, your Tusafiri team transfers you back to your hotel.
Your Kilimanjaro journey comes to an end.
DAY 3 — SHIRA CAMP → MOIR CAMP
High Moorland | 5–7 hours
Today takes you deeper into Kilimanjaro's high-altitude environment.
The trail crosses the Shira Plateau before gradually climbing toward Moir Camp, located on the northern side of the mountain.
This quieter section offers a more remote feeling and provides another valuable day for acclimatization.
Overnight: Moir Camp
DAY 6 — KARANGA → BARAFU CAMP
Summit Zone | 4–5 hours
Continue toward Barafu Camp, the final high camp before your summit attempt.
The landscape becomes increasingly stark as you enter Kilimanjaro's high-altitude summit zone.
After reaching camp, rest and prepare your equipment for the early-morning summit climb.
Overnight: Barafu Camp
