MARANGU ROUTE

The Classic Kilimanjaro Trail

5–6 Days | Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

A classic route to the Roof of Africa, with the comfort of mountain huts.

The Marangu Route is one of the most established ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Often known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” it approaches Uhuru Peak from the southeastern side of the mountain and is the only main Kilimanjaro route offering sleeping huts instead of tents.

With a straightforward trail, established mountain camps and the option of a longer 6-day itinerary, Marangu is ideal for travellers who prefer a more traditional trekking experience with added shelter at night.

Best for:

  • First-time trekkers

  • Hut accommodation

  • Travellers with limited time

Difficulty: Moderate–Challenging
Recommended: 6 Days

WHY CHOOSE THE MARANGU ROUTE?

The Classic Way Up Kilimanjaro

Marangu is one of the most recognizable Mount Kilimanjaro trekking routes.

Unlike Machame and Lemosho, where climbers sleep in tents, Marangu uses permanent mountain huts at the overnight camps.

The route passes through several distinct environments:

Rainforest → Heath & Moorland → Alpine Desert → Summit Zone

The trail takes you through Mandara Hut, Horombo Hut and Kibo Hut before the final summit ascent toward Uhuru Peak.

For travellers who prefer established accommodation and a relatively direct route, Marangu offers a very different Kilimanjaro experience.

6-DAY MARANGU ROUTE

Our Recommended Itinerary

For travellers choosing Marangu, we recommend the 6-day itinerary whenever time allows.

The additional acclimatization day at Horombo provides more time to adapt to altitude before continuing toward Kibo and the summit.

DAY 1 — MARANGU GATE → MANDARA HUT

Rainforest | 4–5 hours

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins at Marangu Gate.

After registration, the trail enters the lush montane rainforest. The steady ascent takes you through beautiful vegetation and forest scenery toward Mandara Hut.

Overnight: Mandara Hut

DAY 4 — HOROMBO → KIBO HUT

Alpine Desert | 5–7 hours

The landscape becomes increasingly barren as you cross the Saddle, the high-altitude area between Kibo and Mawenzi.

The final destination is Kibo Hut, situated at approximately 4,700 metres.

After dinner, prepare your equipment and rest.

Your summit attempt begins later tonight.

Overnight: Kibo Hut

DAY 2 — MANDARA HUT → HOROMBO HUT

Heath & Moorland | 5–7 hours

Leave the rainforest behind as the landscape opens into heath and moorland.

On clear days, views toward Kibo and Mawenzi, two of Kilimanjaro's three volcanic cones, begin to appear.

Continue to Horombo Hut, where you spend the night.

Overnight: Horombo Hut

DAY 5 — KIBO HUT → UHURU PEAK → HOROMBO HUT

SUMMIT DAY

Uhuru Peak – 5,895 m

The summit climb begins around midnight.

Under the stars, you slowly ascend toward Gilman's Point on the crater rim before continuing toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

After reaching the summit, celebrate your achievement before beginning the descent.

Continue down toward Horombo Hut for your final night on the mountain.

Overnight: Horombo Hut

DAY 3 — ACCLIMATIZATION DAY AT HOROMBO

A Day to Breathe, Explore & Adapt

Optional hiking | 2–4 hours

Today is dedicated to acclimatization.

Rather than continuing directly toward Kibo, take a shorter hike around the Horombo area before returning to the hut.

This slower day gives your body more time to adapt to the increasing altitude before the summit stages.

Overnight: Horombo Hut

DAY 6 — HOROMBO HUT → MARANGU GATE

Rainforest | 5–7 hours

Your final day takes you back through the rainforest toward Marangu Gate.

After completing the park formalities and receiving your summit certificate, your Tusafiri team transfers you back to your hotel.

Your Kilimanjaro adventure is complete.

Which Marangu Route Should You Choose?

5 DAYS

The shorter option for travellers with limited time.

The itinerary moves directly from Horombo toward Kibo without a dedicated acclimatization day.

Choose 5 days if you:

  • Have a very limited schedule

  • Are an experienced trekker

  • Prefer a faster itinerary

6 DAYS

Our recommended option.

The additional acclimatization day at Horombo creates a more gradual experience before the summit.

Choose 6 days if you:

  • Are climbing Kilimanjaro for the first time

  • Want more time to acclimatize

  • Prefer a less compressed itinerary

  • Have enough time for a longer climb

For most travellers, we recommend 6 days.
