MACHAME ROUTE
Why Choose Machame?
Often called the “Whiskey Route,” Machame offers an incredible variety of landscapes as you climb Kilimanjaro.
Starting at Machame Gate, the trail passes through:

Rainforest → Heath & Moorland → Shira Plateau → Alpine Desert → Summit Zone

The route also includes some of Kilimanjaro's most memorable sections, including the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower and Barranco Wall, before the final ascent to Uhuru Peak.
For travellers who want beautiful scenery and a genuine mountain adventure, Machame is an excellent choice.

7-DAY MACHAME ROUTE
Our Recommended Kilimanjaro Itinerary
The 7-day Machame Route is our preferred option for most travellers. The extra day allows for a more gradual ascent, better acclimatization and a less rushed experience before summit night.
DAY 1 — MACHAME GATE → MACHAME CAMP
Rainforest | 5–7 hours

Begin your Kilimanjaro adventure at Machame Gate and enter the lush rainforest. The trail gradually climbs beneath ancient trees and mountain vegetation before reaching Machame Camp.

Overnight: Machame Camp
DAY 4 — BARRANCO → KARANGA
Barranco Wall | 4–5 hours
Start the day with the famous Barranco Wall before continuing through the alpine desert toward Karanga Camp.
The shorter day gives you time to recover and prepare for the final stages of your climb.

Overnight: Karanga Camp
DAY 7 — MWEKA CAMP → MWEKA GATE
Rainforest | 3–4 hours

Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you complete the final park formalities and receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate.
Your Tusafiri team then transfers you back to your hotel.

Your Kilimanjaro journey is complete.
DAY 2 — MACHAME CAMP → SHIRA CAMP
Heath & Moorland | 4–6 hours

Leave the rainforest behind as the landscape opens into high-altitude heath and moorland. Continue toward the spectacular Shira Plateau, with increasingly impressive views of Kibo.

Overnight: Shira Camp
DAY 5 — KARANGA → BARAFU
Summit Zone | 4–5 hours

Continue toward Barafu Camp, the final high camp before the summit.
After arriving, enjoy a meal, rest and prepare for your early-morning summit attempt.

Overnight: Barafu Camp
DAY 3 — SHIRA CAMP → LAVA TOWER → BARRANCO
Alpine Desert | 6–8 hours

One of the most important acclimatization days.
Climb toward Lava Tower at approximately 4,600 m, then descend toward Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” profile gives your body valuable exposure to higher altitude.

Overnight: Barranco Camp
DAY 6 — BARAFU → UHURU PEAK → MWEKA CAMP
SUMMIT DAY
Uhuru Peak: 5,895 m
Your summit attempt begins during the night.
Slowly climb toward Stella Point as the sky begins to brighten. From the crater rim, continue toward Uhuru Peak — the highest point in Africa.
Celebrate your achievement before beginning the long descent toward Mweka Camp.

Overnight: Mweka Camp
