RONGAI ROUTE
The Quiet Northern Approach
6–7 Days | Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
A remote and rewarding way to reach the Roof of Africa.
The Rongai Route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the quieter northern side of the mountain, close to the Kenya border. Known for its peaceful trails, open landscapes and distinctive northern scenery, Rongai offers a different perspective of Kilimanjaro.
With a gradual ascent, fewer crowds in many sections and a rewarding traverse across the mountain, Rongai is an excellent choice for travellers seeking a quieter private Kilimanjaro experience.
Best for:
-
Quieter trekking
-
Scenic landscapes
-
Private groups
Difficulty: Moderate–Challenging
Recommended: 7 Days

WHY CHOOSE THE RONGAI ROUTE?
Experience Kilimanjaro from the North
Rongai is the only major Kilimanjaro route that approaches the mountain from the northern side.
The landscape here is noticeably different from the southern routes. The trail begins in woodland and gradually opens into expansive highland terrain, with views across northern Tanzania and toward Kenya.
As you climb higher, the route joins the mountain's southern circuit before continuing toward Kibo and Uhuru Peak.

Rongai is particularly appealing if you want:
-
A quieter approach to Kilimanjaro
-
Northern mountain scenery
-
Open landscapes and wilderness
-
A gradual ascent
-
A private trekking experience
-
A different perspective from Machame or Lemosho

7-DAY RONGAI ROUTE
Our Recommended Itinerary
For most travellers, we recommend the 7-day Rongai Route.
The additional time allows for a more gradual ascent and gives you more opportunity to adapt to the increasing altitude before the summit attempt.
DAY 1 — RONGAI GATE → SIMBA CAMP
Woodland | 3–4 hours

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins on the northern side of the mountain.
After registration at Rongai Gate, begin trekking through woodland and gradually ascending toward Simba Camp.
The first day is intentionally relaxed, allowing you to settle into the rhythm of the mountain.

Overnight: Simba Camp
DAY 4 — MAWENZI TARN → KIBO CAMP
Alpine Desert | 5–7 hours

Cross the high-altitude Saddle, the broad desert-like area between Mawenzi and Kibo.
The vegetation disappears as you approach Kibo Camp.
After arriving, enjoy an early meal and prepare your equipment for the summit attempt.

Overnight: Kibo Camp
DAY 7 — OPTIONAL RECOVERY / TANZANIA EXPERIENCE
A Slower Finish

The 7-day option allows us to build additional flexibility around your mountain experience.
Depending on your overall itinerary, this day can be used for additional recovery, a relaxed morning in Moshi or Arusha, or the beginning of your next Tanzania experience.
Optional: Continue to a private safari or Zanzibar.
DAY 2 — MANDARA HUT → HOROMBO HUT
Heath & Moorland | 5–7 hours

Continue upward as the vegetation becomes more open and the landscape begins to reveal the scale of Kilimanjaro.
The trail passes through heath and moorland toward Kikelelwa Cave.
With the northern slopes behind you, the views across the surrounding landscape become increasingly expansive.

Overnight: Kikelelwa Cave Camp
DAY 5 — KIBO → UHURU PEAK → HOROMBO CAMP
SUMMIT DAY

Uhuru Peak – 5,895 m
The summit attempt begins during the night.
Climb slowly through the darkness toward the crater rim, eventually reaching Gilman's Point before continuing toward Uhuru Peak.
At 5,895 metres, Uhuru Peak is the highest point in Africa.
After celebrating your achievement, begin the descent toward Kibo before continuing down to Horombo Camp.

Overnight: Horombo Camp
DAY 3 — KIKELELWA → MAWENZI TARN
High Moorland | 4–5 hours

Today's trek is shorter but climbs steadily toward Mawenzi Tarn, located beneath the dramatic peaks of Mawenzi.
This spectacular setting provides an opportunity to rest and acclimatize while surrounded by one of Kilimanjaro's most impressive landscapes.

Overnight: Mawenzi Tarn Camp
DAY 6 — HOROMBO → MARANGU GATE
Rainforest | 5–7 hours

Continue your descent through the lush Kilimanjaro rainforest toward Marangu Gate.
After completing the park formalities and receiving your summit certificate, your Tusafiri team transfers you to your hotel.

Overnight: Hotel in Moshi or Arusha
